How Often Should You Pump Your Septic Tank in Baldwin County, AL?
By Steven Boyett • October 19, 2026

If you own a home in Baldwin County, you've probably wondered how often a septic tank really needs to be pumped. The honest answer is "it depends," but there are solid guidelines, and following them can save you thousands of dollars.
At Steven Boyett's Septic Service, owners Steven and Jessica Boyett have spent more than 30 years helping local families keep their systems healthy. Here's what we tell our customers.
The General Rule
Most household septic tanks need septic tank pumping every three to five years. That's a starting point, not a promise. Your schedule depends on several things.
Household size. More people means more wastewater and more solids. A family of six will fill a tank much faster than a retired couple.
Tank size. A larger tank gives solids more room to settle, so it can go longer between pumpings.
Water use. Frequent laundry, long showers, and garden tubs add up. Spreading laundry across the week is easier on your system than doing it all on Saturday.
What goes down the drain. Garbage disposals, wipes (even "flushable" ones), grease, and harsh chemicals all shorten the time between pumpings.
Vacation rental use. If you own a beach rental in Gulf Shores or Orange Beach, guest turnover can put far more load on your system than a typical home, and you may need more frequent service.
Why Pumping Matters
Solids settle to the bottom of your tank as sludge, and fats and oils float to the top as scum. The liquid in the middle flows out to your drain field. When the tank is too full, solids and scum can escape into the drain field and clog the soil. A failed drain field is the most expensive septic problem there is, and it's almost always avoidable with regular pumping.
When we pump your tank, we remove the liquids and solids, inspect the tank structure and baffles, clean the effluent filter if you have one, and dispose of the waste properly at a certified facility.
Local Conditions Make a Difference
Coastal soils and high water tables here in South Alabama put extra stress on septic systems, especially after heavy rain or tropical weather. Because we've worked in this soil for decades, we know what holds up in this area and what doesn't.
